For those that aren’t aware, leisure marching is a sport that is suitable for ladies in their more senior years. It is non-competitive but provides participants with a way of having reasonably easy exercise which is beneficial to the health, but also can be heaps of fun. Obviously as we get older, we can also become forgetful, but with having to learn various moves within a plan and how many paces to a movement this also helps to keep the mind active.
Social lives can also be expanded with various activities added to the mix. For the team I’m in, we work on the principle that with 10 members to a team plus the coach, it is highly likely that there could be a birthday falling somewhere in each month, so we’ve decided to celebrate monthly over lunch. The fact that some months there is no-one celebrating and other months we have multiple days doesn’t make a spot of difference, we get together anyway! On the chosen Saturday (which is when we hold our practices) we head away for a great time of food, fun and fellowship, which can last well into the night.
Although we are non-competitive we do have a National and a South Island get-together for as many teams that would like to join in, for a weekend where we can see what other teams are doing, fellowship and of course the fun that comes from a Saturday evening’s social event.
These normally take the form of a theme decided on by the host team(s) and have so much variety and creativity involved that it gives memories too precious to miss out on.
Hopefully as time goes on and I’m able to enter in some of the things we do, you’ll come to appreciate the benefits of this new life-style that I’ve branched onto and share with me the laughter and leisure that I am now enjoying so much.
